Search Engine Ranking 101

How can you optimize the search engine ranking of your business? While SEO can be a bit tricky to navigate, it’s an imperative part of your business that you simply cannot afford to ignore. When you improve your visibility online, you’re increasing the likelihood of attracting prospective and new customers to your business.

So, how can you improve your visibility online? Allow the SEO experts at D3 to guide you through updating your website, social media accounts, and Google My Business profile to rank higher in the search results.

Improving Your Sites Ranking

1. Publish Relevant Content

One of the largest drivers for your search engine rankings is great, quality content. Content that is created for your intended users will help to increase site traffic and establish your business as the authority in your field. To do this, identify specific keywords and keyword phrases to use throughout your site. Think about what a user would search for to land on the pages that you have on the website. Finally, try to place those keywords in your URL, the page title, headings, or subheadings.

2. Update Your Content Frequently

Search engines love to see (and rank) websites that are updated with new content frequently. Regularly updated content is one of the best indicators of the relevancy of a website, so keep it fresh and up to date! One of the best ways to do this is with monthly blog and content audits on a quarterly schedule to ensure that everything is up to date.

3. Updating Image SEO

Be sure that you’re optimizing all of the images on your website so they rank for SEO and are placed in a Google Image search result. Customize the filename before adding an image to your website to provide search engines with more information about what’s on the page. You should also add alt text and title text to each image. Search engine crawlers will see this and signal to search engines that this is what the page should rank for. Additionally, alt text is great for ADA compliance, as that text will be read by screen readers, and appear if a page is not loading properly.

How Social Media Influences SEO

1. Sharing Website Content

We’ve all seen this scenario before; a brand shares an article on Facebook and all of a sudden it’s “gone viral” with several hundred comments, likes, shares, and most importantly views. As a result of all of this new traction, the article or blog post will move up the ranking on Google for keywords and relevant content. Sharing content on social also helps your new pages to be indexed more quickly by Google and other search engines.

2. Social Channels Rank

While social profiles do not impact your website’s SEO, they do hold some serious influence and real estate on a search engine result page. In fact, social media profiles are often among the top searches for brand names. Social profiles often feel more personal than a website, so it’s a great way for a customer to get to know you and your brand. It pays off to have complete profiles with up-to-date and engaging content

3. Social Media Are Search Engines

In today’s world, people are no longer going to just Google or Bing to look things up. They also use social media to find what they’re looking for! Search engine optimization does include those searches that you put through your Instagram or Facebook search bar. What does that mean for your brand? Remember to implement your SEO strategies on your social media platforms. Ensure that your videos include captions, that your Instagram images include alt text, and that your profiles are completed with no information missing.

Optimize Your GMB Profile

Google My Business uses many factors to determine rankings for businesses. The top three being relevance, distance, and prominence.

1. Relevance: How well does your business align with the search intent? If your business meets the customer’s needs, your Google My Business profile is more likely to appear. Therefore, it’s important to be as clear as possible about what your business actually does.

2. Proximity: Local ranking is important! It helps to both include where your business is located, and create location-oriented content on your website. Google uses what it knows about the area to boost local rankings, so be sure that your location is clear.

3. Prominence: The activity around your listing is one of the most important factors. Are customers leaving you reviews? Are you posting events and local content? Keep your GMB profile updated with new photos and important information such as your hours, if you’re open for dine-in, carry-out, etc. When you update your website, be sure that the content is being published to your GMB profile as well.
