Understanding Website Analytic Jargon

Please keep in mind that all website statistics are slightly inaccurate. For example, some visitors’ IP addresses may change between visits or some visitors may go through proxy servers. Analytics are fairly accurate but they are constantly changing, so use all web statistics and analytics as a guiding point.
To help you better understand website analytic jargon, we’ve included a cheat sheet of keywords below:
Sessions: Once referred to as Visits, a Session is defined as the amount of time a user spends on your website; consisting of one or more page views, social interactions, ecommerce transactions, etc. A single session has a default session timeout of 30 minutes, which means that if a user is inactive on your website or leaves for more than 30 minutes, the session is ended. The number of sessions per day is one way to measure websites traffic.
Users: Previously known as Unique Visitors, User metric shows how many individuals have been browsing your website within a specific date range. This includes both new and returning users. So even if a user has had multiple sessions within the specific date range, it will only be counted as one user.
Page Views: This is the number of times users view a page that has the Google Analytics tracking code inserted. If a user visits the same page multiple times within a single session, each viewing of the page will add to its page view count. This covers all page views; if a user refreshes the page or leaves the page and returns, these are counted as additional page views.
Unique Page Views: In Google Analytics, a Unique Page view is a single viewing of a page, even if it was viewed multiple times within a single session. For example, if a user viewed the page once in their visit or five times, the number of unique page views will record as just one.
Bounce Rate: The percentage of single-page sessions on your site. Regardless of how a user got to your site or the time they spent on it, the percentage represents the number of visitors who navigate away from the site after viewing only one page.
Medium: The type of traffic on your site is referred to as the Medium. This includes organic (unpaid search), CPC (cost-per-click, paid search), referral (referral), email (name of custom medium created), none (direct traffic has “none”).
Organic Search: This is what most marketers aim to increase. Organic (unpaid) search is traffic that comes from a search engine, such as Google or Bing. The results are determined by how well the page is optimized for search engines. One thing to note is that paid search ads are NOT counted in this category.
Paid Search: This traffic counts how many people are clicking through to your website from paid ads. These purchased ads are managed through accounts such as Google AdWords or Bing Ads. Note that paid search is also referred to as Cost-per-click or CPC.
Social: In Google Analytics, the acquisition reports automatically includes free traffic from social media, including Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Pinterest, etc. The Acquisition report also includes a set of detailed social reports to further analyze the success of your inbound social traffic.
Direct: This type of traffic occurs when users type your website’s URL into their browser or click on a link in an email application (without campaign tags). Also, be aware that instances when Google Analytics cannot determine a source they will automatically be assigned as direct.
Referral: This traffic is reported when users land on your site by clicking from another third-party website. The referrals report gives you access to see all of the websites (by domain) that are sending traffic to your website.
